Some of the most successful mash-up music in history
The practice of mash-ups consists of joining two or more tracks by superimposing the vocal part of one track over the instrumental accompaniment of another using samplers or turntables.
This practice has spread to many musical contexts and has led to the creation of many famous works. However, mash-ups have given rise to legal disputes regarding the intellectual property of the tracks used. Jazz musician Glenn Gould is credited with being one of the forerunners of this technique, thanks to a 1955 recording in which he mixed national anthems on piano. The first real example of mash-ups was probably 'The Flying Saucer' by Bill Buchanan and Dickie Goodman, while Frank Zappa named it 'xenocrony'.
Over the years, the phenomenon developed further, resulting in many other successful works, such as 'Wonderwall of Broken Dreams'. In such a mash-up, songs by Oasis, Green Day, Travis and Eminem were combined, resulting in an appreciable result.
