Phil Collins turns 72 today: 5 curiosities about the historic singer-songwriter

Phil Collins was born on June 30, 1951 in Chiswick, south-west London. During his extraordinary career, both as drummer (and later also singer) of Genesis and as a soloist, he achieved many records.

Collins discovered his musical vocation at the age of 5, when his uncles gave him a toy battery for Christmas: then his parents bought him a real drum and from that moment Phil has never left his musical instrument.

Phil Collins holds a record with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney
Along with Michael Jackson (Jackson 5) and Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Phil Collins is the only artist to have sold over 100 million albums worldwide both as a solo artist and as a principal member of a band (Genesis).

His dream was to play with The Who
The idol of Collins was in fact Keith Moon, the drummer of The Who, who died in 1978. In 1989, Phil Collins managed to fulfill his dream of playing with The Who, performing with them during a concert in Los Angeles.

Collins was the only musician to be present at the Live Aid both Wembley and Philadelphia 
 Live Aid was the famous concert held on July 13, 1985 at the Wembley Stadium of London and at the John F. Kennedy Stadium of  Philadelphia , organized to raise funds for the  famine that afflicted Ethiopia. After performing in London, Collins flew to America thanks to the supersonic  plane Concorde of British Airways   and also managed to perform in the United States, where among other things he played with Led Zeppelin.

For the animated film Tarzan he sang in 5 different languages
The soundtrack for Tarzan was produced in five languages: English, Italian, Spanish, French and German. In addition, in 2000 Collins won the Academy Award for Best Original Song with You'll Be in My Heart, which was part of the soundtrack of Tarzan.

He is an avid collector
For years, the former drummer of Genesis has collected memorabilia related to the battle of the Alamo in 1836, but it is not enough: like friends Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton, Collins in fact has a passion for model railways.
