Best debut albums according to Rolling Stone
Officially entering the world of record trade is not easy for any musician, which is why the release of the debut album is probably the most important moment for those who dream of working with music.
In 2013, the music magazine Rolling Stone compiled the ranking of the 100 best debut albums. This is the methodology: some albums were excluded if the artist then accomplished even greater feats, while debut albums with incredible success were highlighted that were subsequently no longer equaled by their artists.
Also excluded from the ranking are debut albums by solo artists by musicians who were already known in band (e.g. John Lennon). Here are the top ten positions.
The best debut albums according to Rolling Stone
Entering the recording world is not easy for any musician, which is why the release of the debut album is probably the most important moment for those who dream of working with music. In 2013, Rolling Stone magazine compiled the ranking of the 100 greatest debut albums. This is the methodology used: debut albums with incredible success have been highlighted, a success that in most cases has no longer been equaled by those artists. The ranking also excludes debut albums by solo artists by musicians who were in already known bands (e.g. John Lennon). Here are the first positions.
Horses - Patti Smith (1975)
Horses is considered by many music critics and music lovers as one of the most important records in the history of rock thanks to its innovative sounds, tending towards the nascent punk. The album cover recalls a famous posing photo of Frida Kahlo, taken by Robert Mapplethorpe.
Music from Big Pink - The Band (1968)
This record is known to be a combination of different musical genres, from country to folk to rock and soul: the result is a very original album, with a unique sound. In Music from Big Pink there are three songs written by Bob Dylan, which has embellished this critically acclaimed album.
Is This It - The Strokes (2001)
Is This It had great success, not replicated later by the other albums of the group. The album was released in two different versions for the European and US markets. The cover of the European version depicts the shapes of a woman stroking herself, the American one (in the photo) depicts the Big Bang, a collision of particles carried out at CERN.
Straight Outta Compton - N.W.A (1988)
Straight Outta Compton is considered one of the most important albums in the history of rap, as it redefined the canons of hip hop with lyrics that dealt with new themes, also using the typical language of the ghetto. The album has achieved a total of 10 platinum records.
The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground (1967)
The album is considered one of the most important, influential and acclaimed albums in the history of music. To remain iconic, however, is also the cover of the album, which portrays a banana designed by the famous artist Andy Warhol.
Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses (1987)
Appetite for Destruction has sold over 30 million records worldwide, with 18 million copies purchased in the United States alone. The album includes many of the most famous songs of the Guns N' Roses, such as Welcome to the Jungle (opening track), Sweet Child o' Mine and Paradise City.
Are You Experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967)
The debut album of the band The Jimi Hendrix Experience immediately obtained a lot of success both among music critics and among the public. Overall, the album went four platinum and in 1994 Guitarist Magazine listed it as the most influential guitar album of all time.
Ramones - Ramones (1976)
The recording of this album took place very quickly, with a limited budget of about $6,000. The cover of the album portrays the members of the band leaning against the wall and dressed in a rather particular way: their style influenced the way of dressing of the fans of the group and not only.
Licensed to Ill - Beastie Boys (1986)
The album is dedicated to the mother of band memberAdam Horovitz , who died in the same year of the album's release. The success ofLicensed to Ill has been incredible, also thanks to his unique style that combines very different sounds, alternating typical sounds of the rap with riff of electric guitar and more, giving life to a completely original style.
Rankings
25/04/2024
The well-known US magazine Rolling Stone in 2021 has updated the list of the 500 most beautiful songs of all time.
The ranking was first published on December 11, 2003 and was compiled by a jury chosen by the editorial staff, composed of 172 musicians, music critics and experts in the recording industry. Subsequently, the ranking was changed twice: the first in 2010, the second in 2021, when 254 songs that were previously not present were added.
Obviously, there is nothing more subjective than music: these songs are considered the best according to the criteria defined by Rolling Stonemagazine, but each of us has his own personal ranking of the best songs ever. Here, however, is the Top 20 of Rolling Stone.

In 2008, 'Rolling Stone' compiled a list of the 100 best singers of all time.
This ranking was compiled 15 years ago by 180 people, including several musicians (e.g. Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Justin Timberlake, George Michael, Keith Richards), journalists and music experts.
On 1 January 2023, however, 'Rolling Stone' published an update of the ranking that revolutionised the list, especially with regard to the Top Ten. As the well-known US magazine was keen to point out, this ranking does not only take into account technical and vocal abilities (it is not a list of the best voices of all time), but also the originality of the vocal timbre, the record catalogue, the writing ability and the musical legacy of the singers in question. Here are the top 20 positions.
