The calculation has been split in two, due to the advent of technology, downloads and Spotify streaming, which have 'drugged' the market and made the previous charts truly obsolete. Bing Crosby - White Christmas (1942)
50 million copies sold - The song was written by Berlin for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. The composition won the Oscar award for best original song at the 15th Academy Awards. Since its release, "White Christmas" has been covered by many artists; the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single in the world.

Elton John - Something about the way you look at me/ Candle in the Wind 1997 (1997)
33 million copies - 5 days after the release of 'Something about the way you look at me', it was released as a double-sided single with 'Candle in the Wind 1997', a song in memory of Princess Diana who died that year. Guinness World Records 2009 states that the song is "the best-selling single since the start of the UK and US singles charts in the 1950s".

Tino Rossi - Petit Papa Noel (1946)
30 million copies - Petit Papa Noel was first sung in 1946 in Richard Pottier's film Destins. Tino Rossi's song, written by Raymond Vinci (author of the lyrics) and Henri Martinet (author of the melody), was subsequently reissued several times (also posthumously): it is the best-selling record ever in France.

20 million copies - 'We Are the World' is a 1985 charity song, written and composed by US singers Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, produced by Quincy Jones and recorded by USA for Africa ('USA' stands for 'United Support Artists'), a supergroup of 45 music celebrities, mostly from the United States. The aim was to raise funds to support Ethiopia, which is suffering from a severe famine.
